From the Mountains to the Prairies,
we are offering a beautiful
NIPPON WALL PLAQUE
for lovers of fine Japanese Wares.
This (Japan) NIPPON Plaque features a gorgeously Hand Painted BLUEBIRD with wings stretched for flight or for landing. The PINE BRANCH has three PINE CONES, two of which have a moriage raised patterning. Some of the pine needles are surfaced with enamel slip trailing.
On back, the round base has two holes for hanging the plate. The 47 Mark is a Green M in a Wreath, with Hand Painted and Nippon around the Wreath. According to Page 108 of Collectors Encyclopedia of NIPPON PORCELAIN Fifth Series by Joan F. Van Patten, the M stands for Morimura Bros., Importer. The Mark was put in use in 1911.
The Glossary reveals that Nippon sounds like Neehon in Japanese. Also, to the Japanese the Pine Tree is symbolic of friendship and prosperity and represents the winter season.
In her book, the author makes reference on page 11 to another book written in 1918, Japan at First Hand, by Joseph I. C. Clarke. In the book, Mr. Clarke described in detail his visit to Japan. He denounced inferior porcelain wares made in obscure factories. But he mentioned that the MORIMURA porcelain factory manufactured high quality porcelain.
