Here we are offering an antique bronze casting
of a female pig modeled by Jules Moigniez, 19th century sculptor.
The lifespan of French Jules Moigniez was from 1835-1894.
Between 1859 and 1892 he exhibited thirty of his works at the annual Salons.
At the 1862 Exposition in London, he was awarded
the English Medal Award, a prestigious honor.
A highly regarded sculptor,
his works were successful in France, England and America,
where he sold most of his renowned game bird sculptures.
He became ill in 1869 and no new models were produced thereafter.
This, his TRUFFLE SOW, is thoughtfully detailed from nostrils to curly tail,
and even to a plant growing on the ground beneath her belly.
Truffle pigs, you probably know, were prized for their unique ability
to sniff out the location of a rare fungus, the truffle,
greatly appreciated in French cuisine.
The chocolate truffle is a bargain by comparison!
